hey does first step have an impact for an LB? I got a piece of AEQ with first step and i was wondering if anyone else has used this for a LB with good results. Seems like it could help.

Let's look at the definition of FS:\
This player has a very fast reaction time. The First Step skill gives him a boost to acceleration when starting from a dead stop. This skill is very important for players who rely on speed to create separation from defenders or to keep up with a speedy offensive players. Additional Levels: Increases the chance of the skill working, and the boost to acceleration.
Changelog:
- First Step has been updated to not only improve acceleration as it normally does, but it actually increases max velocity briefly when it goes off. This allows those with very high agility to still see some benefit from the skill.
Here are the key aspects of it:
- Boost to acceleration
- Based on a chance to trigger
- Increases max velocity
- When starting from a dead stop
My opinion:
If you are a straight up coverage LB that never blitzes, pass on First step. If you are blitzed often, First Step will give you the little extra push to pressure the QB or clog a hole. If you play in a zone defense and your DC does not put you in the middle of the zone, then FS will help you move to your zone area. However, if your player reads the play is going in the opposite direction, then First Step may hur.

I don't think you understand how first step works. It has a chance to fire anytime you're starting from a dead stop.
It helps on everything from the snap to coverage. Anytime you change direction you are stopping. First step can fire.
I see it on my corners all the time. They back pedal the receiver stops, as my corner "changes direction" he bursts up to make a P.D. It works more often then you give it credit for. It works all the time. It's really a good s.a.
a lot of people take "starting from a dead stop" too literally on this one.

Until someone can post a quote from bort that FS triggers when changing direction, then I will believe it. We all know the SA's descriptions operate in the grey, but "from a dead stop" does not have any gray space. 3 seasons ago my LB used 2 pieces of AEQ with FS up around 5-6 and I only noticed a difference while blitzing and on ST's. My coverage abilities (not to be confused with stats) did not change. Furthermore, not all changes of direction are dead stops.

(It can only activate when you've got < 1.5 acceleration "units" of velocity, no matter where you are on the field.)
It's always been far less useful for RB's than WR's for instance, because of that fact. The RB is usually up to speed when he hits the hole, so first step wouldn't even have a chance to do anything.

Watch every LB on this play
http://goallineblitz.com/game/replay.pl?game_id=612061&pbp_id=4229610
FS will fire here for them.
Every other player in the play can also benefit from FS at some point - they all start from a dead stop at the beginning of the play and can meet their opponent faster (or go by him, or get away from him)
How much the benefit is worth is the part I'd debate.
For CB#1 he could use FS when the WR goes by him and for a split second his best method of coverage is staying still.
For CB#2 FS would essentially be worthless because he's backpedaling and would only create a large gap between him and the receiver he's covering.
For the HB and FB first step might get them to their block faster, but I have a feeling they'd need a good deal of vision to pull off the same blocks if they had to do it under a speed boost.
The SS and FS would see a benefit from first step in this play by getting to their respective zones faster, then when they get there they stop and could benefit again in going toward the ball carrier.
PS: I'm not a huge advocate of FS for most positions.

I completely missed that thread. It still does not sway me enough to chane my opinion that FS is a top three SA for LB's to search for, thanks to the chance to trigger. Based on reviews of footage, I will agree that teams who use Zone rather than Blitz as the final option in the Assignment selection will receive a far greater impact from FS than say a defender in M2M.
