As was asked of me a while back, I have compiled a ranking of the best (and worst) teams and leagues in the BBB. I have now completed the entire rankings for the 16 BBB leagues. To add to my list of accomplishments, I will also complete what is likely the longest post in GLB history with this post….lol
For those of you not familiar with my formula, I use a set of stats drawn directly from the GLB website, or inferred by combining several of the stats available. In this formula, I’ve tried to account for several things that contribute to the effectiveness of a team’s Offense, Defense and Special teams, such as how a higher percentage of opponent possessions that end without scoring is indicative of a better defense. I’ve used some categories like this to supplement some other more obvious categories, such as how many points you’ve scored and how many yards you’ve gained. Additionally, wins are accounted for, however, the way my rankings are done, it is entirely possible for a team with fewer wins to be ranked above a team with more wins. Say a 12-4 team ranked above a 14-2 team. While in a single league, my rankings have not yet produced a 2-14 team ranked above a 13-3 team (just for this example, I picked numbers), I suppose it is possible (although unlikely) for a 2-14 team in the best league to be ranked higher than a 13-3 team in the worse league, although I think this is highly unlikely.
I gathered all of these stats (17 Offense, 16 Defense, and 5 ST) for each team in each league, then pooled them all. I then calculated a score for each team based on the average and standard deviation of the stat BBB-wide (for the entire 512 teams). The scores for each statistical category are then multiplied by any weighting factor (some categories are more indicative of a successful team than others, and are therefore weighted more – ie. total points allowed is more important than how many sacks your defense gets), and then tallied, and normalized. The normalization allows me to weight offense and defensive rankings equally (7/16th each), while not weighting ST as much (2/16th), even though I have different quantities of categories for each side of the ball.
Together, I compute an overall score which I’ve used to rank all 512 teams
Overall = (Offense*7 + Def *7 + ST *2)/16
The higher the score, the better your team.
For those of you who read all of that, these rankings are only a comparison of the stats that each team has put up over the course of the season. There is no measurement of team strategies or planning taken into account.
Additionally, the entire analysis is also flawed, since a team in BBB#1 (let’s say team A) was competing against other BBB#1 teams, and therefore their stats were in part determined by the quality of BBB#1. So having a good team in an otherwise terrible league, would likely lead to inflated stats. Likewise, having a fantastic team (call them team B) in a really good league might hold them to lower stats overall. Therefore Team A and Team B in this hypothetical situation, may have identical stats, but Team B would likely clobber Team A if they played them directly.
So in the end, this is for fun. It took me a fair bit of time, so I hope at least a few of you appreciate and enjoy it.
Good luck in the playoffs to those of you who made it, and better luck next season to those who did not.
Since it’s a pain in the ass to look thru all 512 teams to find yours, I’m going to post the rankings in 2 formats. The first will have the teams as ranked from 1 to 512. The second will have the teams sorted by league (so you’ll only have to look thru 32 teams to find yours), then you can go back to the first ranking to see how close you are to other teams.
Thanks,
StickMan
note, I think these were too big to post all together, so I'm going to use multiple posts...
