what do you think is more important for catching and holding on to the ball?

- second cap jumping
- first cap strength
- first cap carrying

oops I made an error in the title, I mean carrying, not catching.

In terms of purely catching and holding onto the ball I would have to say carrying but I can tell you that vision and jumping increase the range in which you can potentially catch the ball.

btw i'm not sure my initial question was clear.

assuming you could achieve any one of these within the next level or 2, which would be more valuable for catching/holding? Let's throw vision in there too. But I'm setting catching aside since that's obviously the most valuable for well, catching lol. I'm trying to see what folks think about how relatively important these other ones are in the catching process:

- second cap vision
- second cap jumping
- first cap strength
- first cap carrying

it also seems like certain one might be more valuable for certain passes. a longer pass of 15 or 20 yards over the top probably uses jumping and vision more, while a 10-yard curl would probably use more strength and carrying to get position and shield the ball with the body. so it could depend on how the WR build and how he is used, but overall, which would help most with increasing catch %?

Unless you notice a lot of plays where it seems like you caught the ball, then it's knocked away by a CB I wouldn't bother with carrying. Just train it with strength, assuming it's at a point where it's still valuable to train. I'm a big fan of vision personally, I think you'll see the most benefit from 2nd capping that.

since we do have "caught, knocked away" in the pbp finally, it will be easy to see how often that happens. so far not to my guy but to others on our team, and if that shows up a lot for a WR then carrying may be the answer for him.

i know i dont have a WR but my TE has had 6 knocked away passes last game. am guessing it is the Jackhammer VA comming into play.

so carrying will be the one for this?

Yes, I think knocking away is like a fumble roll, and carrying should help the most.

Mr. Reliable VA is also a counter for this (each level +2% to catching and holding onto passes), but only on 3rd/4th down.

Of your choices:
Catching the ball - Jumping
Holding onto the ball - Carrying

vision softcapped
jumping softcapped(at least)
carrying 35-40(not sure where the magic number here is yet)

I have 44 carry and never have had the ball knocked loose. My strength is 30 btw. I do have them deflected but not knocked loose.

Does strength actually play a role when you're trying to catch the ball and holding on to it? I still have 8 in strength and I seem to be doing fine...

Absolutely not... Don't let people con you into investing in strength unless you are trying to make a power receiver, hence it not being a minor or minor skill for wr's. only thing moderate strength is good for is breaking tackles against farm/cpu/gutted teams and blocking.
