The I-20 Shootout is the game between the Dallas Longhorns and the Fort Worth Red Raiders. It is named for the highways, I-20, that connects the two cities and I am hoping it can become the divisions first true rivalry for several reasons.
Dallas and Fort Worth are only 30 miles apart.
Longhorns and Red Raiders = Texas Longhorns and Texas Tech Red Raiders (rivalry)
We are garanteed to play once a year.
We are fairly close in talent.
The cities share everything.. til now (DFW airport, the Cowboys, the Mavericks, the Rangers, the Stars, Six Flags)
I grew up in Fort Worth hating everything from Dallas, except the Mavericks
Anyways here are the results of this years 1-20 Shootout
The Red Raiders Drop the Big One
Dallas, TX (AP) - When two cities face each other in 4 quarters of football, usually its just two random cities that hate each other for that 3 hour game. Their passion for the hate simply lies with the fact that their home teams are playing against one another. But what happens when the game is over and the away team must leave? Well, more than likely nothing, they just go home.
But during Thursday’s match up at Irving’s Dallas Stadium, both teams where the away team. The Fort Worth Red Raiders and the Dallas Longhorns are two teams in their first year of operation in the USA BBB #6 Western division and are only set 30 miles from each other. They played in Dallas Stadium to that the game would be as even as they could make it while still having plenty of room for both team’s fans.
The game began with a near 60 yard kick to the rookie PR, Jonnie Nitro, who ran it back for 31 yards. The Red Raiders began their drive at their own 45 and looked to take advantage of the great position. But after two stops it was third and 5 until the veteran quarterback, Alex Sutton, found the rookie receiver, Kerry Wes, for a seven yard gain. But after two more plays, each for 0 yards, Sutton couldn’t come up with the same magic he is known for. The Raiders punted.
After a three and out by the Longhorns, the Red Raiders took over at their own 44. The first play was dropped by Trey Vindico, who promptly made up for it the next play with a dazzling 12 yard burst up behind the right tackle. Only a few plays later, Sutton threw to the new receiver, Turbo Charge, for a 13 yard gain and a first down. And after three more rushes, Trey Vindico punched it in with a run to the left, making the score 7-0 Red Raiders.
A three and out and a missed field goal later the Longhorns were stuck at their own 35, but after a 13 yard pitch to Wut Da Pho, veteran tightend, Astro Glide, evened the score with a 50 yard dash of his own. 7-7 tied.
Several three and outs by both sides later, including three Raiders drops, an interception thrown by the Longhorns and a short Longhorns field goal it was half time.
The Longhorns got the ball first, and started on Red Raiders soil, but after a few plays fizzled. The Raiders took it and looked good until three straight Longhorns deflections forced the Raiders to punt to Dallas, who drove 50 yards and took a field goal. Fort Worth returned the favor after a long 13 play drive and cut the score to 13-10.
The forth was all Longhorns, who added two more field goals to the total making the score 19-10. But the Raiders weren’t ready to go down easy. With 1:51 left on the clock, Fort Worth took over at their own 33 and after two 21 yard pass plays and a drop in the end zone, the Raiders where done.
After the game it was announced that the Longhorn’s kicker, Luka Modric, was player of the game with 4 field goals and 1 extra point.
They will meet in the same stadium next year, hopefully for a game that was just as close and evenly matched.
