Hey all, so I've been meaning to start a pure receiving TE, but so far there seems to be 2 different methods of building them. The first is to follow the typical WR build and cap speed/agility first to either 61 or 68, followed by catching, jumping, vision, strength, etc...

Now I also see that some people here think that going after catching/vision/strength first is more important since those are the major attributes while speed/agility are minors. Is there any hard evidence that one build will be better the other? I'm leaning towards first capping catching and maybe either strength or vision, then work on double capping speed and agility. But is that really more effective than going after speed and agility first?

You'll end up with more points in more places if you go after the majors first, which equates to a better build if you know what you are doing. I recommend the second one, but do not have "hard evidence" as you are asking for.

the build that caps the major attributes first will have more SP in the long run but won't be as effective as quick.

If I had it to do over again, I would probably cap catching first, vision next, then x2 catching, while training spd/agl as much as possible.

The issue with a recieving TE is actually getting the QB to throw it to him, high catching will supposedly help get more looks.

When would you go after strength/jumping? After speed/agil?

for a true recieving TE I would leave strength alone, get the most out of vis/cat untill lvl 22 then pump spd/agl. a slow process for sure.

My advice is don't touch strength, it levels up as a major attribute pretty well, and you don't really need much if all you are going to be doing is running routes. Jumping should be addressed after catching, vision, speed, and agility because it is not even a minor attribute, no bonus to getting to it early.

so 2x catching and vision before adding SPs to speed/agil?

I'd say vision to the first cap is probably sufficient. Catching to the second couldn't hurt, though.

No point in capping vision before catching, speed, or agility, since there doesn't seem to be much benefit to getting it above 48.

And I disagree. But, do what you want.

I think it's worth while to cap vision, if you don't touch it again you'll almost get through the soft cap with leveling bonuses alone.

Well, I only have one TE, but he's worked out pretty well. Vision is clearly no better than the 4th most important attribute for a receiving TE - if you still wanna cap it 2nd, go ahead. I haven't seen much evidence that a TE with 70 vision is better than one with 50.

Yeah, but if you plan on taking vision to 50 anytime during your career, it really makes sense mathmatically to cap it first or second with catching to maximize your natural level gains.

Maximizing level gains doesn't necessarily maximize build effectiveness if one of the attributes isn't that important.

Notice the big "if."
