anyone tried Ball Hawk VA and having success with catching deflected passes? I'm thinking of resetting from sure hands to ball hawk. with the increase in deflections this year, it could focus a big boost just a the crucial moment when you need it the most.

the 1% boost is the same as the attribute boosters, except it works across 4 attributes at the same time, so it is actually a pretty big boost for just that split second when you most need it.

Sorry for the slight thread necro, I hope it's better than a new thread on the same subject.
I've seen people on this forum advocate taking Sure Hands, but Bort has made it pretty clear (http://goallineblitz.com/game/forum_thread.pl?thread_id=1684992&page=38) that it only helps with drops and not with deflections. Personally, my WR has many many more times balls deflected than drops, and solving deflections has been a big issue for the passing game in general this season.
Ball Hawk reads as follows: "This player has a nose for tipped passes. Each level of Ball Hawk gives a +1% bonus to speed, agility, jumping, and catching from the moment a pass has been deflected until it is caught or dropped. Applies on both defense and offense". I'm going down the speed/agility VA path to start off like like many others here are, and when those are finished and it's time to get some VAs to help with catching the ball, will Ball Hawk be a bigger help than Soft Hands? Ball Hawk gives a 1% boost to four different abilities, and because my guy's speed and agility and higher than his catching that amount that they get boosted by will be higher.
Additionally, because the defender gets first crack at the ball when a pass is in his zone (as stated by Bort in the "What is the anatomy of a completion?" thread http://goallineblitz.com/game/forum_thread.pl?thread_id=1809885), would it be logical to assume that the "after deflection" roll that Ball Hawk helps with is going to be the very first roll made by a WR a decent chunk of the time when a pass gets thrown to you versus a good CB? If this is the case, and the roll that Ball Hawk effects triggers a decent number of times each game, the real question that needs to be answered in determining it's viability for speed built WRs is how much the speed, agility, and jumping attributes contribute to the roll to catch the ball after it has been deflected versus the catching attribute. Has anyone read about what the ratio might be? In the two threads I linked above, unfortunately, none of the mod replies are quantitative.

I haven't seen it help with one of my guys. He's seen a ton of PD's this year, and has only caught 4 out of 32 (12.5%). When I've tracked PD's that were caught in previous years (for my CBs) it was around 15% of them caught.
I guess my hope was that if it didn't help catch more balls, it might provide a little burst to separate from the defender for some more YAC, but that hasn't been the case either.

Go back and read how a catch is calculated. Then go back and read what Sure Hands does. Then tell me EXACTLY how many drops you have. If you think you know for sure, then go back to the beginning and re-read how a catch is calculated, then go back and read what sure hands does. Continue to repeat this until you actually figure out you have no idea how many drops you have and that all those PDs could be your drops.

Thanks whoshotjr, do you know what your PD catch percentage was before you took Ball Hawk? What would you recommend instead of of Ball Hawk to help with catches in traffic for VAs, catching/jumping to reduce the CB's deflection roll?
Mob-6, I'm new to the game and just starting to learn all this. It's true that I have no idea how that mechanics work, that's why I'm here asking questions. There is no search feature on this forum so it's difficult to find answers sometimes, I'm sorry if it's already been covered somewhere else. It looks like you are implying that some dropped passes are registered as deflected passes instead, and the Sure Hands re-roll can trigger in those situations? I re-read those two threads and couldn't find what you were talking about, could you explain further please?

Defenders have a chance to pass deflect your drops, if that happens then it isn't recorded as a drop, it is credited to the CB as a PD.

That makes sense, are you saying that a drop could be registered as a deflection if the 1st and 2nd rolls both failed ("defense gets first crack at the pass, followed by the receiver") but the 3rd succeeded ("followed by defense again if he misses/drops it")?

I'm not clear on what you are saying. It would work like this:
1) Defender's first roll fails- pass is not PD'd or picked off.
2) WR drops ball.
3) Defender's second roll is successful, he PD's or picks off dropped ball.
Play is recorded as a PD, not a drop. If the defender's 2nd roll doesn't touch the ball, it goes down as a drop. If the WR had 15 point Sure Hands he would have a 75% chance to re-roll his catch attempt.

Gotcha, makes perfect sense, thanks for the explanation. That definitely makes Sure Hands more useful. I'll have to go over some plays and see if I can spot the difference between a drop that becomes and PD and PD that comes from the CB's first roll (before a drop could ever occur).

If the defenders first roll is a success and the WR gets hands to the ball, but drops it, then it goes down as a PD too right?

yes... this is why I still believe that Sure Hands is useful
