aggressive run stop idea. In certain situations I know his play is 50% outside left run, and 50% OT run right. How about 4-3 cover 1, weakside shift, blitzing ROLB, LOLB and CB2?

I'm 99% sure I know a situation where he always plays this, BUT, if he switches up on me and the play goes pass, will the the SS pick up WR2?

Maybe if the HB and TE don't go out in a pass pattern. The FS probably will, but why not just run a 425 cover 1 and blitz the extra CB? That way, you are covered either run or pass. Or if you are that sure, run a cover 0.

That would be pretty horrible tbh.

I think your best bet, if you know they won't pass from it, would be 4-3 Cover 1, strong side shift with the SS, MLB, LOLB, and CB1 blitzing.

It's risky though, if they run a pass or something you are probably screwed...if they send more than the 2 WR's on routes.

I've had limited success running a 3-4 with no shift, versus a team that can run either left or right out of the Strong-I.

If you shift strong to stop the offtackle play, you could end up seriously screwed when they run left, which is normally a pretty mediocre call, but versus a strong shift, it's very efficient.

Then again, I think the LB pathing in the 3-4 is still kind of screwy. Note, I did say "limited success".

Stopping any outside run, the easiest way to get an edge will always be to have a big bad run stopping DE, which most teams still lack.

your best bet for that would be a 4-3 cover 0 with all of the secondary in man coverage.....blitz the Middle Linebacker. Make the OLBs spy the QB or RB, he would have limited time to throw the ball. The Corners would take the outside recievers, and the slot would be taken by the safeties. The TE would be covered up by the OLB.

If he takes it to the pass than you have to adjust the MLB to spy, and the OLBs to zone to the flats, drop the safety over the top, move to Cover 1.

I am a defensive coordinator at a High School, I get used to thinking on the run a lot.

I think CB blitzes work pretty well against them myself.

Well, unless the back you're facing has 60+ strength, in which case, this season, they're going to just roll right through 99% of all CBs in the game.

Good point.

Are they going to be running sweeps and pitches with a power back though?

That would result in a lot of TFL's.

I think it can be stopped in a 3-4 no shfit blitzing the left inside line backer

It won't be enough unless the LILB is an absolute stud.

What would be a good defense if they did? as well as running off tackle inside and passing out of strong I?

a good aggressive play i put in for Strong I is 4-3 cover 1 man strong side shift blitz MLB, and SS great for stopping the offtackle runs. I would try 3-3 cover 1 No shift blitz LOLB and CB3 for left outside runs

A 3-4 Cover 1 no shift Blitz LOLB and ROLB would make it difficult to get the edge, while maintaining pass protection.

If you are confident they will no pass, then you should bring random fs or ss to apply pressure on the line to pick up the blitz and stop the TFL.
