Here are the newly updated power rankings for the USA BBB#4...

I made some changes to the formula this week, to weight some categories as more important than others. Such as "the percent of opponent possessions that end in a punt or turnover" is now worth 1.50 the values of what it was before, when all categories were equally weighted. But it didn't really change too much throughout the league. THe big movers were the J Villians, who after a tough loss last week bounced right back to 2nd place this week. And the Dallas Annihilators, who after a tough loss this week dropped to 7th place.

LW---TW---Team (record)-----------------------------Overall-----Offense---Def---ST
1---1---Beer Town Brawlers (5-0-0)------------------------2.95-----1-----1-----1
10--2---J Villains (4-1-0)----------------------------------------6.52-----3-----2-----9

edit: I don't know why my post was posted twice, but I'm going to ask that any comments be kept in this thread, so we don't have comments all over the place.

So, yes, post comments here.

Thanks,

The Ninjas are pretty happy that they have only given up one TD so far this season. However, we know our next game is going to be our toughest challenge yet.

According to the points, yeah =)

But J-Villains defeated Chicago, Pythons lost to them. So I guess that's a little head-to-headish advantage :O

Yeah, there's no head to head component to the rankings. For tomorrow's game, I'll have a quality win factor, but it won't be looking directly for head to head match-ups, or indirect head to heads if that's how you want to think of them.

I just meant when the points are even... that would appear to be the most logical way to assess who is ranked in front (that, or strength of schedule).

You dropped one spot.

And I mentioned that there were some changes due to the addition of weighting some categories as more indicative of a "good team" than other categories, so I expected there to be changes this week. Actually if I would have redone last weeks rankings with the new system, there probably would have been changes, just due to the new weight some categories account for. So I wouldn't rush to judge it "flawed" just yet.

And in my defense, beating Dallas did drop them below you.
And LA's defense is 3rd compared to the 12th place you're holding onto.
So I don't see to much that you really have to complain about.

After I add in the quality win component, you'll likely get a slight boost from beating Dallas, so maybe that will help you out a bit as well.

Thanks,
StickMan

Dont get me wrong stickman...We appreciate ur work in compiling these rankings. Just seems a little off with Team MaddenWars ahead of us with 1 loss. This game is all about matchups so basing it on stats doesnt quite do teams justice. Guess we will just have to prove it throughout the season. Really dont understand how our defense is #12 when we just shut down Dallas for 37 rushing yards and 149 passing yards (186 total). Also the CPU adjusts for teams that are losing by passing more. We answered that with 4 interceptions.

Suggestions, not complaints will improve what stickman has got going. Nobody else has put the effort in to do this and he is doing what he can to make it as realistic and fair as possible. Suggestions is why he added the weighting of categories and is adding the quality win components.

The other four weeks is prob what killed your D ranking,if being #12 is so bad, but this week helped it, but not enough to overcome the other four. I see where you are coming from not knowing why your D droped after a good week, but knowing how the stats are weighted, i can shed a little light on why you are where you are. You don't have alot of sacks and hurries and then you are third worst in pass defence. For being a 5-0 team, these hurt you the most and is why your defense is #12. Being 5-0 will be rewarded when he adds the quality wins after the next game and that will help you out, i don't see you being #12 if you win again this week. Talk to stickman if you want more info on that.

The machups are only part of this game, there is also a big human factor. Because of this the the stats are a good way of keeping tract of how good a team is without adding your own opinion. It is the same criteria for each team and it reflects how good the human aspect is also. If you have another good week on D then i am sure you will move up in D.

You have to remember that this is a work in progress and is open for suggestions. If you complain make sure you suggest a way that would improve the problem.

Just to give you some crap, my player has more sacks and hurries than your entire team.

I get the impression it's stat based ranking so really who you've beat or how good of a team they are isn't the only factor. Unless I'm mistaken having no losses or beating better teams isn't so much the deciding factor in this system as how many stats your team accumulated for the game, that's just the nature of the system. There are probably more accurate ways if you want to set something up no ones stopping you.

You're absolutely correct in your statement that stats alone cannot provide a 100% accurate ranking of the teams. There are a lot of behind the scenes stuff that I can't account for with this, such as how the team playcalling is set, etc...

But, what we can hope for is that towards the end of the season, it will get more accurate as we play more games.

You're also right. At this stage early in the season, a lot of teams have "padded stats" because the teams they have played against are not the strongest teams in the league, so therefore, maybe they put up 600 yards of offense, or held them to negative total yards, whereas teams who have played good teams have much more mediocre stats. As more games are played, this will work itself out, since teams will get a chance to play weaker teams as well as stronger teams. So, since it's a stat based thing, there will be some errors in it.

The quality win component that I will be adding to the rankings tonight should help make up for this somewhat, where a team who has played against teams with winning records will be ranked higher than a team who has played the bottom of the league. So we'll see how that works out.

Basically this whole season is going to be a "beta" test of my formula, and I think that at the end of the season, my rankings and the final league rankings will be pretty close.

One thing I'd like to keep track of is to see if my power rankings confer any prediction capability? Does the number 8 ranked team consistently beat any team ranked lower, etc...I don't think this will ever be 100% correct, but that's a goal I have for this.

I'm glad you guys are enjoying the rankings (at least a little bit...lol) and I appreciate the input. I've learned that what I think is most important is not always what other people thing is important, and sometimes I'm even able to be convinced that their view is right. So you guys giving me more to think aboutwith how to improve the rankings is great!

Thanks,
stickMan

and for those that dont agree with them, they dont give out trophy's for power rankings, and you dont move up a division over power rankings either
