Western Conference
1 Fresno Fire
W 44-24 over Miramar Leathernecks
I think everyone is surprised that Miramar kept the game as close as they did and it wasn't the blow out that Fresno was hoping for. What Miramar did was reveal a method of scoring points on Fresno, a sacrifice made for the rest of the conference or sorts. I doubt that Miramar had any grand delusions about pulling off an upset, but it's clear that they took this game seriously and may have caught Fresno napping. Who's willing to learn what Miramar has taught everyone? Simply put, Fresno got nipped by the 8th ranked playoff team and their breathing a sigh of relief, before setting out to prove a point, it was a fluke. We'll see what San Jose has to say about that.
2 Jacktown Smackdown
W 66-6 over San Francisco Stonecutters
Not much to say really, Jacktown won against San Francisco handily. Now we've got the match up we were hoping for in round two. Jacktown edged out Reno by 1 point in the last game of the regular season in a wild game. It's rematch that Jacktown isn't looking forward to because Reno has an axe to grind with them.
3 Reno Marauders
W 39-21 over Kansas City Royal Chiefs
They beat KC, but the game was closer than the score shows in my opinion as KC went down with fight. Reno won the right to a rematch of their last season loss (when they lost by one) with Jacktown in round two of the playoffs. Reno is still seething from the loss even though they may not show it. The Jacktown/Reno game is the game to watch in this round folks because it will once again prove to be another contested battle. This has the potential for fueling a long rivalry as both teams move up in leagues.
4 San Jose Chupacabra
W 48-37 over Fort Wayne Talons
It was a tight game with Fort Wayne, whom I secretly was hoping to to pull off an upset, but San Jose held on with some well timed plays. They face Fresno next, but they don't need to be stressed as much now, Marimar did them a favor and showed them how to score points on them. The only question is, will San Jose stick with what's worked so far or learn something from Miramar.
Eastern Conference
1 American Freedom
W 104-7 over B.C. Assassins
Whoa, biggest blowout of the first round. Nothing against BC, they at least stung Freedom once when nobody really expected them to. Freedom now faces Tri-Cities, which was Freedom's only real scare in the regular season. Make no mistake, both teams will be studying that game and the playoff win, but Freedom still has the edge as Tri-Cities essentially won in an offensive shoot out and Freedom's defense is the stingiest in the conference. Regardless, Tri-City and Richmond had the kind of game that Freedom wasn't looking forward to.
2 Syracuse Souls
W 93-10 over Baltimore Blood Ravens
Another decisive blowout in the playoffs and I don't think that Baltimore really expected to win, but I think that everyone would have thought the game would have been a bit closer. Next up, Bortsville who Syracuse upset in the regular season rather convincingly. Syracuse will be in for a fight round two with Bortsville, no way around it.
3 Bortsville Mystery Nerf
W 66-0 over Colonial Zoners
Convincing win in round 1, but now they face a tough challenge with Syracuse. Bortsville was the favorite in the regular season and Syracuse pulled off an solid upset that Bortsville never saw coming. That shouldn't happen again since Bortsville's defense should have learned it's lesson. Offensively, how long can Bortsville ride is one trick pony offensive scheme before they try to pull a fast one and switch to the passing game, this might be where they have do it if they want to survive to round 3.
5 Tri-Cities Fever
W 64-71 upset over Richmond Retros
Tri-Cities pulled off the only upset of the playoffs and did it in a classic struggle that most people were expecting. But, that last regular season loss is still haunting Tri-Cities because now their in a position where they have to face Freedom on the road. They've really got their work cut out for them as they face the top two CBs in league, Freedom's Hendrix and Jackson, but Tri-Cities made Freedom's heart stop in the regular season, giving Freedom it closest contest of the year. This the game to watch in the East folks, can Tri-Cities find just a little more magic?Despite the losses, they did score in games they were heavily outmatched in.
