Heading into the playoffs there is no clear cut powerhouse that is an overwhelming favorite to win the conference crown. The top 4 teams which have dominated all the rest of the competition, have taken turns beating each other up leaving the top rankings a jumbled mess.
Teikoku managed to hold on with the last playoff spot by virute of a late season 3 game winning streak and a meltdown by the Thundertown Brawlers in their last 4 games.
The conference crown is up fro grabs and it truly is anybodies game. If one team can step up and get hot at the right time, they may have an inside track to the championship game.
First Round Matchups:
Teikoku Alexanders (9-7) at Florida Beachdogz (15-1)
Regular Season Meeting: Florida won 76-21
The Beachdogs stormed through the season with their only loss coming late in the season to the Yancy Street Grimm Reapers. They once were considered unbeatable, but have looked human in games against Yancy and Rochester.
The Alexanders got hot late in the season after nearly missing out on the playoffs and won their last 3 games on the way to securing the 8th and final seed.
Prediction: The Alexanders are a good team, but Florida is a legitimate powerhouse and should cruise in this one easily.
Florida 66 Teikoku 20
Victoria Punishers (9-7) at Rochester Dragons (15-1)
Regular Season Meeting: Rochester won 132-17
Rochester cruised through most of their schedule, and won close contests against 2 of the top teams in the league while their only loss came to Florida in a prime time overtime thriller.
Victoria suprised many people by getting hot late in the season and winning 6 of their last 8 games to secure the #7 seed, though the only playoff team they beat was Teikoku.
Prediction: Victoria has assembled a fine squad and are heading in the right direction, but the simply don't have the firepower to stand against the Dragons yet. Dragons roll.
Dragons 63 Victoria 24
Port Moody Pain (10-6) at Reno Knights (13-3)
Regular Season Meeting: Reno won 43-7
The Knights only 2 in conference losses came to Rochester and Florida, they have demolished every other team they have faced including a pretty good beatdown of Yancy Street. They have talent, great management, and are on a roll.
The Pain emerged as one of the best teams not named Reno, Rochester, Yancy or Florida this season though their only win against a playoff team was against Victoria. They didn't get hammered by Reno during the regular season, but ended the season flat getting hammered by Florida and Rochester in their last two games.
Prediction: Reno just has too much firepower to even let the Pain stay close this game and Reno has only gotten better as the season progressed. The Pain should be proud of their season, but it ends in Scott Dbnoff Memorial Coliseum this week.
Reno 56 Port Moody 10
Bronx Black Flag (11-5) at Yancy Street Grimm Reapers (13-3)
Regular Season Meeting: Yancy Street won 58-17
Yancy Street had a magnificient season, losing a squeaker to Rochester and losing to Reno, while they handed Florida their sole loss. They have a roster stacked with talent and have the strength to go the distance if they can get it all together for a run.
Bronx is a tema on the rise and will likely be one of the front runners for the conference crown next season after promotions. They have assmebled a great squad, and with a name like Black Flag, you know they are going to kick some serious ass. Their only losses were to the Fantastic 4 at the top of the conference.
Prediction: Of all the games in the first round this one has the most potential to remain close due to the talent on Bronx. Barring majorly losing the turnover battle, Yancy should still be set to see round 2.
Yancy Street 49 Bronx 24
Barring a major upset this week, it looks like Rochester will host Reno in the second round, with the Reapers traveling to Florida for their matchup. And from there, absolutely anything can happen!
Let the playoffs begin!
