A lot of teams in our conference use the SB as their main offense. It has screens to both sides, runs, various passes, and so forth (most of you guys are probably familiar with this offense).

Is there an effective defense that anyone has developed that slows down all/most of the plays that come from this offense?

Or is it simply a guessing game?

It seems to me that the latter is more accurate but I'd welcome suggestions on any sort of play you have found even mostly effective against this offense.

Your never gonna stop it completely, but you can slow it down. I run a base 4-3 against the SB and it has been effective. I also have a great secondary so that help a lot... You just try to game plan and shut down their most effective play... Thats what I do

Play opposite of your strength.

If you have good CB's, focus a little more on the run and let the CB's handle their jobs. If you have a great line/LB's, run a cover 2 and let the guys up front do what they do.

Of course, if you are playing a team that only runs the slams, just focus on the run...same goes with passing.

What sucks is when they mix up the single back pitches, dives and passes. Gives DC's headaches

Agreed. What makes it hard to defend is its versatility. YOu don't want a LB covering a WR, so immediately that means either Nickle or Dime. If they run right inside you can go 1 Coverage and blitz the SS. But if they also throw to the TE that means you will have the LOLB alone on TE and no help behind him. If they can also effectively throw to the HB in this formation, you have real problems. Originally posted by seanb1979
