Rod Long saved that play (quite impressively in fact), but umm... do you really expect your LB's to do that play after play? I mean, seriously? The DE and CB tried to make those tackles, but ultimately it's the safety's job to prevent the long gain. Do you really expect Ray Lewis to chase down that speedy WR/HB fifty yards downfield? No, that's Ed Reed's job.

While I am on record as stating that I believe agility is more important than speed for an LB, I have never once said to NEGLECT speed. I am more in favor of a 50spd/80agi LB than one that's 80spd/50agi, but I think both are terrible ratios. I believe an ideal ratio for an LB would be roughly 55/75 or 60/70, and tweaked depending on position and role in the offense. OLB's can benefit with more speed in that ratio, while ILB's can benefit with more agility.

Also, if you're still a bit iffy about the ratio, even going 65/65 would be preferable in my opinion over 75spd/55agi or something similar. At least a 1:1 ratio, but agility shouldn't lag behind speed, if at all.

Oh wow. Actually I'm most proud of the next 2 plays in the series after catching that guy from behind.

13:47 1st & G OPP 3 Baron "B-Diddy" Young rush up the middle (2.5 yd gain) [tackle: Rod Long] http://goallineblitz.com/game/replay.pl?game_id=231293&pbp_id=8027914

Gold Coast Corsairs 13:05
13:05 2nd & G OPP 0.5 Yo Orange pass to Wild Thing up the right side intercepted by Rod Long (33 yd return) [tackle: Baron "B-Diddy" Young] http://goallineblitz.com/game/replay.pl?game_id=231293&pbp_id=8027995

Let's examine rod longs play for a minute. he has all that speed to chase that guy down after he beat everyone. wow impressive. I am really impressed.

now lets take the same exact play with a linebacker with 70 speed more agility and str and he probably would have tackled the h.b. for a loss. sorry.

His Linebacker was block almost the whole play. in fact, the fact that he was all speed made that run even possible.

and it looks like he got pancaked by a tight end.

but you redeemed yourself with an int. who passes the ball when they are that close to the goal line? that's was bad o.c. tactics, that made that possible.

in fact it cost the other team the game.

No one else sees the irony in the fact that a HB with 37 Broken tackles on the season broke 4 tackles on that single play?

Hmmm..speed kills, you're right.

that was one of 61 plays for rod long, you are going to get blocked on several plays, regardless of agility or strength - otherwise whats the point of an o-line. the fact that he was able to recover from that is amazing. love'd the next 2 plays more tho

Really? I don't think my linebacker has ever been pancaked, and taken out of the play so badly. The fact he caught up is nothing compared to the fact he could have, and should have stopped the play from being that big in the first place.

You can't just run the ball every time your inside the 5 yard line or it becomes very easy to make a goal line stand against your team if the DC does any scouting at all.

the linebackers on the inside should have had more strength and tackling so they didnt get blown up... You call that a success I call that a failure

FWIW, The 50+ strength LB whiffed on the play. The SS has 49.82 strength and the DE has a natural 62.5 strength.

So what now?

You obviously know my guy has less than 40 strength. And the other Defenders on the play that whiffed all have smaller ratios of speed:agility. I'm not bagging on my Defense, its just that some of the points here are ideas and hypotheses that aren't any better substantiated.
