I have a teammate who's a TE with high strength (all his equipment is also in strength). Total he has 61 strength (counting equipment) at level 17. In the future, he plans to raise it to about 90. Opening his build is irrelevant - I'm just curious is high strength for a TE who will STRICTLY be used for RECEIVING a lucrative option? He will do ZERO blocking.

The plan is he will make only short catches and with his high strength, he can possibly break the first tackle to pick up additional yards. He is meant to compliment the running game, so he doesn't need big yardage to succeed. He needs only to move the chains.

Your thoughts? Is high strength good under these circumstances? If so, how high would you go with it?

i dunno. i started that route and it didnt work to well so i went speed/agility. you dont get near as many receptions as a speed te because you have no speed to create a cushion between you and the lb to get open. my te by the time he is level 30 will have 70+ str and 84 speed with equipment. so i think ill have the best of both worlds. but dont go all str unless your a blocker.

If blocking isnt important and you want short receptions I would get high jumping. Many defenders still have low jumping, so you could create a mismatch.

No QB is going to throw him the ball if he can't get open in the first place. So strength might help after a catch - but I don't know how many times he'll even be targeted if he doesn't have enough speed and agility to generate separation from the LBs.

STR is way overrated for breaking tackles imo and from experience. he will probably break more tackles with agility, not to mention get open better.

I have three TEs; Two are built as blockers/allround TEs and as such are high on strength (75+) and (At lvl 30 and 31) are around the softcaps for speed, agility, vision, catching and blocking. I'm also building a TE (Currently lvl 17 with 79 strength)) with even higher strength, intended purely for receiving.

The problem however seems to be that you're not facing defenders head on. A power HB or FB who receives a screen pass, swing pass, dumpoff or whatever usually has some space to turn downfield and get going, at which time they can break tackles. A TE with this build will often make catches underneath with the defender (LB or SS; not a CB) close by. Meaning that the defender gets an easy tackle. When you turn upfield and get to max speed however, it's harder for them to tackle you.

That being said, one of my higher-lvl TEs had 24 broken tackles in 44 receptions in S4, with 17 broken in 64 receptions in S5. Not great, and still low YAC numbers, but a dedicated TE, with not only high strength but also higher speed, agility, carrying and Lower Shoulder (As well as Quick Cut for better angles and avoidance) could probably do a lot better. Still remains to be seen what effect, if any, the new plays added will have on this type of TE.

Receiving TE's need speed. I had a pretty balanced build until this offseason when I turned around and moved most of my equipment into speed, boosted and dumped all the points I could into speed. Then he turns around and has his best receiving game ever.

Bad idea.

My TE is supposed to be balanced but he doesn't really receive that well atm. He's lvl 31 with high 70's str, soft capped spe, agi, catch, blk and he rarely breaks a tackle.

Speed is key along with a good OC to gameplan for the TE.
