I know he will cover the TE when the TE goes on a route, but I've been watching film this morning and noticed him going to #2 WR when the TE stays in to block.

Correct statement? Anyone have anything to add? Thanks.

That sounds about right for a SS playing cover 1 IRL.

I've just recently seen the SS pick up a back going on pass route on Cover1 if the TE is staying in to block. It seems like a new thing, or at least I hadn't noticed it before.

Were you blitzing the LB that normally picks up the back?

Or do you have some links? I hadn't seen this one in the games I've been watching.

yes, the LB was blitzing...I'll try to dig up a couple of links, but not likely till tomorrow.

Like I said, I'd never seen it before either.

That is his man if you bring the strong ILB in a 3-4 and the TE does not release.

I saw a statement, pretty sure from Bort, saying if the TE has a blocking assignment the SS will find someone else. I'll see if I can find the exact quote, but pretty sure thats it.

EDIT: Can't find it. May have been a dream. Meh.

From what I can tell, if the TE is blocking the SS shifts to the WR on his side.

Bort has said that each of the LB's (I think it extends to all positions) has a progression he follows.

Here is how I believe it pans out in 43 defenses:

ROLB--FB-->HB
MLB--HB-->TE
LOLB--TE-->WR
SS--TE--WR

I can't swear that MLB and LOLB are correct. If you look at any 43 cover 2 man coverage with no blitzing where the FB stays to block and HB goes out for the pass, the R and M LB's both cover the HB.

In the 43cover1 you are almost assured that the SS and the LOLB will be covering the TE unless you blitz one or the other.

Bort replies to a concern I posted here about the issue of the the LB progressions here: http://goallineblitz.com/game/forum_thread.pl?thread_id=1333730&page=13

Hope that helps.

I found the instances where in Cover1 the SS picks up a back if the TE stays in to block:

Is it possible he was responding to a pump fake to the back?

Cover 1 dimes it appears. The MLB was blitzed so there must be some way that the SS defaults down to the HB. Perhaps it has to do with a set of progessions that are activated based on defensive personnel compared to offensive. Dime cover 1 would need to be different than 43 cover 1.

I think that the progressions of the LB's and Safeties were designed with his original defensive schemes or put together when the Defensive AI came out. The progressions I lined out above just seemed a logical way to do it at the time. That progression scheme was suitable at those times, but just not up to snuff when it comes to an evolving offense.
