Govt isn't suppose to be running business, and that looks more and more like where the politicians are directing us.
"We can take care of them, they arn't smart enough to take care of themselves" I think its insulting. I started my own business, I paid my own way through school. I don't need some trust fund kid telling me how the "real world" works.

Deacon...I'm very interested in 2 questions from you.
#1: Where you from / where are you at now? Just a state is fine (I'm not a stalker!). Your Civil War mention caught my eye.
#2: Does Obama and his "no one <$250k will get a raise in taxes" line make you nervous. I don't own or know much of anything about owning my own business. But when Obama says that, I feel like he has to be talking about raising business taxes if he's cutting individual taxes. But I don't think that people realize that raising taxes on businesses affects every individual who works for a business. If your profits drop due to taxes, then you're less likely to give raises, expand, and hire new employees, right? Doesn't that extrapolate to WalMart and big business to some extent?
I'm really interested in a business owner's perspective. That's what I think could happen, but I'd like to hear from someone who actually does own his own business.

Fort Wayne, Indiana.
No Obama was right when he said most small businesses wouldn't be effected by his taxes.
However it has nothing to do with his plan, 80% of small business fail in the first 2 years of being opened.
They wouldn't get effected.
This is the number I'm fuzzy on but I believe its 50% of those will fold in years 3-5.
Those also unaffected.
However those small businesses that DO make it will be effected. A business that does $20,000+ in sales a month. Like a good Pub, Dry Cleaner, Print shop. Places with about 10 employees. They get a burden since obviously they can afford it.
Like minimum wage, yes the cost of living has gone up. Most people I know are above it, but I know some arn't. However it went up more then a dollar, the backend tax the employer pays also went up (Employers have to match certian tax contributions). Yes that cut down on the amount of employees, and raised prices. There is less and less items on that Wendy's .99 menu
About Fort Wayne (Allen County). Its very anti-business.
$87 to Register with the state
Register with the city? You might as well pass you check book from office to office in the county building. Your accruing business taxes before you can even make your first sale. Priceless
Hope that helped

My brother owns a small biz in Ocala, FL... He is a FDOT Certified Steel Fabricator; he manufactures the steel structures that you see on the interstate the hold the exit signs. He is doing very well in the first year he was open he has well surpassed over $1mil in pure profit and looks to do 3-4 mil next year. Doing work for the Florida Department of Transportation is pretty steady but VERY tedious work.

I will not post a specific comment on this year's American election as I am not American. But, I would like to mention that here in Canada we just had an election (...wait for it, it's not a history lesson), and I would like to point out the POSITIVE points of BOTH systems.
Positives of Canadian Election:
1. relatively short (usually 30 days)
2. 'cap' on individual donations (1000CAD)
3. four (realistic parties/choices) and two joke parties (marijuana party & Green)
4. inexpensive for tax-payers
Positives of US Election:
1. very entertaining
2. more comprehensive relating to individual issues
3. relatively popular/interesting debates
I would like to see a combination of these systems be put forth in Canada. American elections are FAR more polished and professional than the Canadian ones and too be honest our debates look like friggin' WPT poker night...1987!

Someone on one of these politics threads had it right when he said something like anyone who says they are going to cut your taxes is just lying. Forgive me if I screwed that up but looking at the unbelievable amount of money this country owes to China, Saudi Arabia, etc... (thanks to Ronnie and W) there is absolutely no freakin' way everyone's taxes are not going to go up in the near future. The sheer greed of connected corporations (oil companies, military industrial complex, financial institutions), their CEO's and board members, and our elected officials has brought this country to it's knees. Watch the sweet deals and Dick will get when they are out of office. Corporate board gigs with money and stock options that will be unreal. The system is broken, the genie is out of the bottle and it will be hell to get him back in. That's my .02
